The club was named after Edward Douglas Scott Montagu, Third Baron of Beaulieu, who was also the founder of the National Motor Museum in Britain. A plaque was unveiled on 27 January 1957 by Mr .Benjamin Stolson, ex Headmaster of Germiston School and President of the United Hebrew Reform Congregation. It was a strange mix of people as there were also a lot of English speaking people from Britain.

The founding fathers were people like Hans Markowitz, Hans Groneman, Ronnie Deutsch, Laz Nathan, Hans Simon just to name a few. It was truly a country club. It had an Olympic sized swimming pool with change rooms under cover, a braai area and two sand tennis courts. On a Sunday all four bowling greens would be full. It was just one huge family who had sing-alongs in the clubhouse, as there was a permanent piano and many of the members were adept musicians, possibly the best being Ronnie Neuman who entertained not only every weekend but also on Old Years Eve.

In 1979, due to financial problems, the club sold the property to the Sandton City Council and the name Morningside Country Club came into being. This opened the doors to accommodate other sports such as hockey, running and tennis members. The club has grown from strength to strength to what it is today.
